As the mornings get darker and the weather cooler, are you finding it harder and harder to pull yourself out of bed in the morning to get your day started? Try these simple exercises to wake you up, and have you energised and ready for the day ahead.
1. Deep breathing
You don’t even need to get out of bed to start this one. Simply lay on your back, place your hands lightly on top of your stomach. Take a long deep breath in, fully expanding your stomach. Hold for 5 seconds and then breathe out slowly for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times in total. Be sure you are breathing through the stomach. If your chest is rising instead of your stomach, you are shallow breathing. Take deeper, controlled breaths in through the nose.
Create a simple routine of 4-5 yoga stretches that you can do immediately upon getting out of bed. This will increase blood flow throughout the body and wake up the central nervous system, energising you.
3. Gratitude journal
Keep a small notepad and pen close by and write down 3-10 things that you are grateful for each morning. Spend a moment to actually think about and appreciate each thing that you write. Allow your body to feel the gratitude. This will put you in a great mood for the day ahead.
Finally, to get the heart rate up and blood flowing; perform 20 burpees. Start standing up, drop down to a push-up position, touch your chest to the floor and then jump back to your feet and into the air. Land and go again.
These 4 things will help to energise you for the day ahead and get your day off to a healthy, happy start. And maybe to a gym session throughout the day!!
